Optical fibre array detector to monitor irradiations for medical radioisotope production

Low-energy cyclotrons are in use worldwide to produce medical radioisotopes for nuclear medicine. Beam monitoring during the irradiation of targets is difficult due high-power density low-energy protons, space limitations, and interference with beam delivery. Doped silica fibres sensitive prompt ionizing radiation from bombarded target, induced luminescence (RIL) when exposed. The can be attached outside target a low-profile fibre array, ensuring efficient safe operation. Here, we present results our prototype such array. It consists four Ce-doped diameter 200 μm has been installed at TR13 cyclotron TRIUMF where it tested different conditions.
